Start
with a plain stocking
Start with a plain Christmas stocking, either store-bought or handmade.
Felt is best if you plan to use a lot of iron-on
appliques.
Decide
on a concept
Decide on a concept. Modern or old-fashioned? Simple or elaborate? Understated
or over-the-top? Consider focusing on a theme.
Hit
the crafts store
Hit a crafts store to check out embellishments. If you can draw, pick
up some fabric paint.
Buy
some felt
Buy some felt in contrasting colors to your stocking so you can cut
out your own original designs and sew or glue them on.
Use Christmas cookie cutters as stencils.
Check
out the dollar store
Check out the dollar store for holiday decorations, bric-a-brac, and
small toys that you can attach to the stocking
Write
the name
Write the name in glue, using a squeeze bottle, pour on glitter, and
shake off the excess. Or spell it out in applique letters, which come
in every kind of font and material imaginable. Consider writing the
name someplace other than across the top, like vertically down the side.
Be
original
Above all, be original. Your stocking can be any color, any design –
kitschy or sophisticated. The choice is yours.
